Feels great to wrap up the first day.
Today's trip was 58.1 miles, from Chicago, IL to Hebron, IN. I kicked off at around 8:45 AM. I would've left earlier, if I could get any sleep from all the excitement.

This morning, my roommate Frank dished me a handful about how dangerous this trip would be, as I would be stopping by dangerous parts of town. I snarked back, "Chicago is probably the dangerous of all cities I'll be stopping by". Boy was I right. Driving through the South side, I got a lot of stares and aggressive drivers. Once I got into Indiana, strangers stopped by to wish me a merry Christmas and reach out to offer help. People have been incredibly friendly so far, and it's helped me push forward.
Once I got past the Illinois-Indiana state border, I got so excited I put a quick video together:
*Warning: sound is horrendous due to heavy winds. turn down your volume!

On the way down Indiana, I spotted a Cabella's RIGHT next to the bike track, and so as any giddy man would, I made a pit stop. My hobo-style packing job (previous video) was quickly replaced with a proper sleeping mat and much MUCH smaller, and higher quality sleeping bag to boost my confidence.
Towards the trip, there were a variety of setbacks; one of them being heavy headwinds. The cold breeze was much heavier and faster than I had expected, and it took a big toll on my my speed and energy. Here's a short update I took along the way:
Towards the end of the ride, I noticed how much food I ate that day... so as soon as I got back, I logged my calories burnt, and food I ate today:
Today's Victims
- 1 can of Campbell's soup
- 1 cup of rice
- 2 cups of mixed nuts
- 1 cup of white chocolate & peanut butter bars (equivalent of 3 Hershey's chocolate bars
- 1 buttermilk fried chicken sandwich
- 1 country fried steak
- 2 fried eggs
- 1 large plate of hashbrowns
- 2 slices of toast
- 0.5L of chocolate milk
Seems insane, but makes sense if you look at the amount of calories I burnt today!
Tomorrow is another big day. I'll be fighting through a solid 77.6 miles of flat road to Rochester, IN. I'm expecting similarly cold weather, but a good part of the afternoon will be strong tailwinds to push me to my destination.
With that, I'll leave you with today's vlog. It was a long day, so a long vlog (~10m) was necessary. If you haven't yet, please check out mAss Kickers!
